Joan Cotie, RSW
I am pleased to be part of the Collaborative Divorce Professionals groups in both Victoria and Nanaimo. In my work as a child/youth specialist and a divorce coach with these teams, I try to assist families to work through the often difficult process of separation and divorce and make plans that will be most effective for the whole family. Separation and divorce is a significant life transition and we work together to assist you to move through this transition in the most supportive manner possible.
I have worked with families and children for over 40 years in many capacities and try to share my experiences and knowledge with them. I have a diploma in child care work, a bachelor and master degree in social work, a conflict resolution certificate, and work toward a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies and law. Please take a look at my CV on my website to see more about my training and experience.
My role as a child/youth specialist is to be an advocate for the children and to offer my knowledge and experience in assisting in making a parenting plan that will work for all of you. I meet with the children and hear and share their views with the parents and professional team. Divorce is not what harms children but how the divorce happens can cause damage. The amount of stress and conflict can hurt children and I will assist to try to put the children’s best interests first.
As a divorce coach I will assist the parents to work together and make plans for how you will communicate, co-parent, and assist your children together. I assist you to negotiate effectively, find solutions and avoid harming your children.
